Fletchers’ Family Farm viewers given sad update in wake of tragic death
A new episode of the ITV reality series aired on Sunday, bringing with it an emotional update
Kelvin and Liz Fletcher delivered a poignant update to audiences on the latest episode of their ITV reality programme, Fletchers’ Family Farm.
A new episode of Series 4 was broadcast on Sunday (March 29) and featured their Peak District farm covered in snow during the depths of winter.
In the most recent instalment, audiences received a devastating update following the loss of the family’s cherished cow, Cherry, which had previously appeared on the programme. Her death meant six-month-old calf Ezra was left motherless before he had been completely weaned.
Since the unexpected loss, the family have kept Ezra under close supervision in their barn, but Liz provided a melancholy update as she confessed she believed he still appeared “a little lost.”
“He’s done really well. It was quite brutal how he was parted from his mum,” she began. “I do feel there’s a look in his eye that he’s a little lost.”
Despite some worry for his wellbeing, Kelvin disclosed there was still optimism for the young animal, as one of the other calves had been watching over him, reports the Manchester Evening News.
He disclosed: “Thankfully in Cherry’s absence, Ruby’s young calf Elizabeth has been keeping an eye on Ezra.” Liz continued: “Elizabeth has been kind to him to be fair hasn’t she? It’s like she knew and has been his little partner.”
Speaking about Ezra’s future at the farm, Kelvin revealed they would keep him in the barn a while longer before letting him join the other male cows. He said: “As Ezra gets a little bit bigger, he’ll probably stay in the shed for at least another month or so.
“What we’ll do then is put him in with the boys. He’ll go into a pen next door and join Crowther and Ray, then we’ve got three males that are all intact and it just allows us to be focussed a little bit more then on Ruby [their pregnant cow].”
Meanwhile in the episode, Kelvin and Liz opted to host their very first farmers’ market. Donating the takings to charity and waiving pitch fees for stallholders, the pair were shown getting ready for the event held at their farm.
Liz, Kelvin and their four youngsters are now in their fifth year of farming, though the journey has been anything but straightforward. Last year, a devastating fire erupted at the farm, rendering their home uninhabitable.
The incident featured on their ITV programme, with Liz and Kelvin shown on camera sorting through their damaged possessions to determine what could be saved. Fortunately, more than a year following the blaze, the family were able to move back in.
